Dr. John A. Batsis discusses Weight Loss Drugs.

Dr. John Batsis recently spoke with Verywell about his concerns regarding the prescribing of weight loss drugs. Batsis believes that some people want quick fixes from providers who are willing to prescribe weight management medications. However, he said that weight loss medications are only one part of a comprehensive plan.

“Obesity is a chronic disease,” said John Batsis, MD. “When we think of chronic disease, a fundamental principle is lifestyle [modification], including aerobic and strength training exercise, diet, and behavioral health.”

Dr. Batsis stressed a holistic approach to weight management. Also, he said this approach should begin by consulting an obesity specialist. This lets patients discuss side effects of weight loss drugs then start at a low dose and before moving to a higher dose.

“Without those conversations,” Batsis said, “patients may be on the wrong drug, wrong dose, or even wrong treatment for weight loss.”
