The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has announced the recipients of the 2024 National Scientific and Health Care Achievement Awards, recognizing individuals who have significantly advanced diabetes care, education and research. Among the esteemed awardees is John Buse, MD, PhD, the Verne S. Caviness Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the UNC Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Dr. Buse has been honored with the 2024 Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award, a testament to his lifelong dedication to diabetes research and patient care. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Buse has garnered international acclaim for his innovative clinical practices and unwavering commitment to the prevention of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their complications.

Dr. Buse places a strong emphasis on collaborating with patients to develop tailored treatment programs that align with their unique needs and expectations. As the Director of the UNC Diabetes Care Center and having served 21 years as division chief in the Department of Medicine, his influence extends beyond individual patient interactions to the broader landscape of diabetes clinical practice. This award not only acknowledges his commendable contributions to diabetes care but underscores his role as a leader and innovator in the field. An awards ceremony will be held during the ADA’s 84th Scientific Sessions in June.
