Dr. David Weber, professor of medicine in infectious diseases, spoke at the School of Medicine White Coat Ceremony celebrating the Class of 2026, on May 21.

“It’s been 50 years since I was in your position, at the University of California at San Diego,” said Weber, who is also UNC Medical Center’s Associate Chief Medical Officer and the Medical Director for the Department of Infection Prevention. “You might ask, I’m well past retirement age, why am I still doing this? And the answer is I’m just having too much fun to want to retire.”

He also encouraged students to take care of themselves, and their families, which he said would make them better physicians.

“You will be inspired by your students. You will take joy in helping your patients. But go and have fun. It’s really a joy to be part of it.”
