Natalie Hairston is an NC native who works with the Ryan White program, and hopes to travel to Anguilla!

What’s your role and how long have you been a part of our Department?

I assumed the role of Ryan White Program Coordinator in March 2023.

 Where are you from?

I am from Eden, NC

What originally attracted you to work at UNC Department of Medicine?

My previous experience as a medical case manager and my desire for a macro public health career originally attracted me to work at UNC Department of Medicine.

What is the most interesting project you’ve been a part of so far?

The most interesting project that I have been a part of so far is the Ryan White Part C grant renewal application which funds a significant portion of the Ryan White project.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

I really enjoy the collaborative atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie among the Ryan White team.

How has your role evolved over time since you’ve been here?

My role has evolved significantly since I started. Initially, I was focused on coordinating the Ryan White grant components, but over time, I’ve taken on more responsibilities such as meeting facilitation and assisting with personnel. This evolution has allowed me to develop new skills and contribute more strategically to our team’s goals.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

One thing I wish people knew is how much behind-the-scenes work goes into program planning and monitoring. It’s not just about the visible results but also the extensive planning, problem-solving, and teamwork that make it all come together.

What are you most proud of, personal or professional?

Professionally, I’m most proud of completing the Ryan White Part C grant renewal application. It was a challenging endeavor but seeing it through to a successful outcome was incredibly rewarding.

What’s one thing on your bucket list?

One thing on my bucket list is to travel to Anguilla. I’ve always been fascinated by the beautiful beach, and I’d love to experience it firsthand.

Do you have hobbies outside of work that you enjoy?

Outside of work I really enjoy dancing and going to the park with my family. Other hobbies outside of work that I enjoy outside of work are serving as the PTA Vice President at Little Angels dance ministry lead.  It’s a great way to stay active and meet new people.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to embrace challenges and step out on faith. It’s easy to feel daunted by obstacles, but they often lead to the most rewarding experiences and valuable lessons.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

A fun fact that not many people know about me is that I love making pizzas. It’s a weekly tradition in my family, and we always enjoy coming up with new recipes and toppings together.
