Cindy Gay, MD, MPH, associate professor in the division of infectious diseases, and Noshima Darden-Tabb, community engagement manager for Moderna’s UNC COVID-19 trial site, discussed the challenges associated with recruiting participants that represent those most impacted by the virus. In NC Health News, they acknowledge the barriers and mistrust of minority populations participation and explain how they are reaching out to faith leaders, community organizations, and local health clinics to help with messaging about the availability and safety of the study.

“From whatever perspective you look at it from – ethics, efficacy, fairness – it doesn’t make sense not to have a significant portion of the people be those who could most benefit from a vaccine,” said Gay.
