On May 19, the UNC Internal Medicine Residency Program held “Resident Research Day” for the 2020-2021 year. Given all of the virtual conferences over the past year, Resident Research Day was also primarily virtual, but selected residents presented their research projects during noon conference. Despite the incredibly busy clinical year, residents remained active in research with just over 30 projects submitted for Resident Research Day.

Congratulations to the top two submissions in the Quality Improvement/Clinical Vignettes Category:

  • “Increasing Inpatient Mobility: A Quality Improvement Initiative,” submitted by Dr. Kimberly Mournighan
  • “Implementation of an Academic Hospital Medicine Procedure Service: 5-Year Experience,” submitted by
    Harish-Eswaran-MD
    Harish Eswaran, MD

    Dr. Hillary Spangler

Congratulations to the top three submissions in the Original Research Category:
  • “Incidence of Vascular Thromboembolic Events in Outpatient with Mild COVID-19,” submitted by Dr. Harish Eswaran
  • “Transmural Inflammation, Ileitis, and Granulomas at the time of Proctocolectomy do not Predict Future Development of Pouchitis,” submitted by Drs. Scott Esckilsen and Joshua Hudson
  • “The GRNDaD Registry: Contemporary Natural History Data and an analysis of real-world patterns of use and limitations of Disease Modifying Therapy in adults with SCD,” submitted by Dr. Alexandra Boye-Doe

In addition, the winner of the “Bondurant-Ehringhaus Research Award” was announced as Dr. Corey Ketchem. The award is selected based on demonstrated scholarly activities and achievement. Dr. Ketchem is active in research endeavors with the division of gastroenterology and hepatology and this year submitted his research about treatment response rates to topical steroids in elderly patients with eosinophilic esophagitis.

A special thank you to Dr. Alex Duncan, assistant program director for research, and all of the judges for their efforts toward making Resident Research Day 2021 a success.
