
Attention on the role of bars in spreading the coronavirus is increasing, and some bars have been identified as the source of outbreaks. A Cleveland Plain Dealer article asks if it is possible to keep Ohio bars open in a safe way. Anthony Fauci, MD, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert explained that bars are not good places to be, during his recent Senate update on the pandemic.
Ada Adimora, MD, MPH, Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the division of infectious diseases, and professor of epidemiology, added that many bars, especially in urban areas, don’t have the space to provide adequate social distancing outdoors.
“It’s not rocket science,” Adimora said. “What do you think is going to happen if you go sit in a bar, close to somebody else, in a relatively small space without a mask?”
