In an article published by Explico.co, Emily Sickbert-Bennett, PhD, MS, associate professor of infectious diseases, described mask combinations that were tested on volunteers, from a single cloth mask to folded surgical masks. The studies found that wearing a full coverage mask, such as a bandana or neck warmer over a surgical mask provided the best filtration.
“This leads us to understand that the double mask is more effective due to the improved fit it offers, not because of the extra layers,” she wrote in the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The study also points out that the double mask may not be necessary if a well-fitted one is already used.

Sickbert-Bennett also contributed to a CBS 17 new story about CDC guidance on masking outdoors, emphasizing that wearing a mask outside depends on the situation.
“There are outdoor settings where you may find yourself in a crowded space and the mask then serves an important role in protecting you,” she said recognizing risk isn’t dependent on the setting.
Whether you’re on a trail, at a sporting event or dining, she offered key things to consider about masking outdoors.
