Vimal K. Derebail, MD, MPH, has been appointed Vice Chief of Clinical Operations of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Jenny Flythe, MD, MPH, Chief of the Division, announced.

Dr. Derebail, an associate professor of medicine and member of the UNC faculty since 2011, is internationally known for his excellence in care of patients with glomerular diseases, vasculitis, and sickle cell disease and widely recognized for his unwavering dedication to patients and deep humility. His patient-centered approach, consummate teaching, and thoughtful leadership were recognized with the 2025 UNC Health Medical Staff Physician Clinical Excellence Award.

In his new role, Dr. Derebail will partner with the division chief to enhance the quality and coordination of patient care, oversee the integration and efficiency of clinical operations, and support division faculty, fellows, and advanced practice providers in their efforts to deliver cutting-edge, person-centered kidney care. His leadership will be pivotal in advancing innovation and excellence in nephrology care at UNC. He will assume the role on July 1, 2025.
