David Wohl, MD, interviewed by WRAL.

As the highest daily numbers of COVID-19 cases are reported globally, David Wohl, MD, professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases, talks with WRAL about schools reopening, recognizing a hybrid system that can reduce the density of students makes a lot of sense. He also acknowledged that many people remain divided about students returning.

“Where many are eager to get their kids back to school so that they can get back to work, and clearly, there’s been a detrimental effect on education,” Wohl said. “Some kids are feeling blue about not being able to be back at school and among their friends. On the other hand, there’s a real risk of transmission when people get together, especially in crowded spaces.”

Wohl said there has to be a balance. “That’s what many of the local school districts are trying to achieve, and I think it can be done. The balance is important to strike, and one size doesn’t fit all.”
