The UNC Division of Oncology offers world-class, cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment of solid tumors, including lung cancer, head and neck cancer, sarcoma, genitourinary cancers, gastrointestinal malignancies, skin cancers, and breast cancer, as well as expertise in a multitude of rare cancers.
At UNC, we are focused on providing care that is technically advanced, compassionate, and coordinated. While harnessing the power of a large world-class academic medical institution, nurse navigators make our system feel small, personable, and easy to navigate. Our intake process is quick—most patients are offered a consultation within a few days, and we will take care of obtaining the necessary records. We coordinate care across allied disciplines in multidisciplinary tumor boards, where patient needs are discussed and treatment recommendations optimized. We collaborate extensively with local oncologists, primary care physicians, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, and other medical specialties. We also work together with nutritionists, pain management specialists, and therapists to focus on quality of life.
The Division of Oncology is within the Department of Medicine, the largest department in the nation’s first public university. We are committed to diversity and inclusion and takes great pride in developing and outstanding physician leaders. Championing transformative research that advances medical practice, we strive to provide expert, compassionate care to all North Carolinians.

Support Research. Help us care for everyone. Help us cure cancer.
UNC houses the state’s only public NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. We are proud to be a global leader in research and to bring these advances to all patients, regardless of race, sex, financial means, or any other characteristic other than suffering from cancer. Our research excellence is reflected in many metrics, including the 9th largest funding for cancer-related research in the country. Our laboratories regularly generate new findings explaining the nature of cancer and showing us its weaknesses. Our clinical trials bring multiple drugs from the laboratory to approval every year. Our experts in these disease states bring these advances to all patients every day through care that is the most advanced and most compassionate in the state. These missions are expensive. Clinical trials cost hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. We provide care not only to wealthy patients who travel for our state-of-the-art trials, but also to the very poorest patients in NC. Please consider helping support us in our mission to reduce the burden of suffering from cancer in NC.
