Help us welcome our newest member to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gretchen Guggenheim, CNM, NP. Gretchen will be joining the Division of General Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Midwifery as a midwife.

Gretchen was born in Raleigh, NC, and grew up in Greenville, SC. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics from Converse College in 2008. She then realized she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and pursue nursing. She completed Clemson University’s Accelerated BSN program and graduated in 2012. Her nursing career began at the Neonatal Critical Care Center (NCCC) at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she developed a passion for maternal-child nursing. Over the years, she transitioned to various specialties centered around women’s and family care, including OBGYN clinic nursing, Labor & Delivery, and Postpartum, which eventually led her to pursue her dream of becoming a midwife.

Gretchen graduated from Frontier Nursing University in 2021 and 2023 and is dually credentialed as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.

She has special interests in the postpartum period, perinatal mood disorders, breastfeeding, infertility, contraception, neonatal care, and education. Her philosophy views pregnancy and childbirth as normal physiological processes, and she values involving women in their own healthcare decisions. She is excited to provide high-quality care to women and their families in Chapel Hill.

Outside of work, Gretchen enjoys trying new restaurants, browsing art galleries, listening to music with her husband, watching movies with her three children, and discovering kid-friendly outings in the Triangle.
