The microbiome is emerging as a modifiable driver of drug responses (efficacy and toxicity). My lab is advancing the field of pharmacomicrobiomics, or, how functions of the gut microbiota transform medications via what we term “Phase IV” metabolism, thus contributing to inter-individual variability in drug response. We use new approach methodologies (NAMS e.g. 2D, 3D primary human intestinal organoids, simplified human microbiome consortia), and classical biochemistry and cell biology techniques, with the goal of enhancing precision medicine by understanding bacterial drug metabolism.
