Professor of Radiology Dr. Charles Burke was appointed Vice Chair of Strategy in January 2021. He previously served as the Department’s Executive Vice Chair (December 2019 – January 2021). He joined UNC Radiology in 1997 as a resident (1997-2001), serving as Chief Resident (1999-2000), and stayed at UNC for his Vascular-Interventional Radiology fellowship (2001-2002). Dr. Burke was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Radiology in his earliest years on Department faculty (2002-2005). He relocated to his home state of Arkansas (2005-2006) for a year of private practice, returning to UNC in 2006. He served for more than a decade as Division Chief of Vascular-Interventional Radiology (2008-2019).

Dr. Burke has been honored within the institution and in his field over many years in practice. In 2004, Dr. Burke received the Department’s Charles A. Bream Teaching Award, an honor bestowed annually by residents to recognize a faculty member’s dedication to teaching. In 2003, 2006 and 2007, he was named “America’s Top Radiologist” by Consumers Research Council of America. In 2013, Dr. Burke was named a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology. In 2020, Dr. Burke was named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.
