At the University of North Carolina, in collaboration with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center as a full member of Cancer Prevention and Control Program, I have lead two cancer exercise research programs: The Get REAL & HEEL Cancer Research program, designed to examine the physical and psychological needs of cancer survivors through an intervention that combines exercise and psychosocial therapies; and the EQUAL project (Exercise and Quality of Life in Leukemia/Lymphoma Patients), a groundbreaking initiative that explores the impact of exercise in acute leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy. Combined with my experience as an Olympic coach, I have extensive experience in physiological function testing and development and tailoring of programs that range from elite fitness regimens to lifestyle physical activity interventions for medically compromised individuals. As an exercise oncology researcher for the past 25 years, I have been the PI, Co-Investigator, and research associate at several universities on externally funded grants, which have allowed me to develop the empirical knowledge foundation for the development of the next generation of studies in the area. Some of my early work has allowed for me to develop a research agenda that examines the effects of different exercise interventions on different physiological, psychological, and functional capacities in cancer survivors so that more specific exercise guidelines can be devised and translated into practice in health care clinics, hospitals, and fitness facilities.
