I am a leukemia physician and health services researcher. The goal of my research career is to improve the quality of care and outcomes of patients with cancer by developing interventions to better align care delivery with what matters most to patients. I believe it is a fundamental obligation—a first principle of caring for patients—to make treatment decisions that aim to achieve the outcomes that patients most value. My research group is working to develop methods to assess patient values, goals, and preferences at the point of care delivery and to evaluate how quantitative value elicitation instruments (such as discrete choice experiments) can increase patient engagement and knowledge to improve shared decision-making regarding chemotherapy.
