Dr. Jennifer S. Smith is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Gillings School of Global Public Health. She is an international leader in HPV-related studies, both domestically and internationally. She has worked on cervical cancer-related research for over 25 years. Since 1994, Dr. Smith has conducted over 260 studies related to the prevention of cervical cancer, HPV infection, and HPV-associated diseases, including epidemiological studies, clinical effectiveness trials, diagnostic validation, cost-effectiveness evaluations, and qualitative acceptability research with collaborative partners globally. Dr. Smith’s current research focuses on improving access to and performance of cervical cancer screening in low-resource settings, primarily in Malawi, Kenya, China, South Africa, and North Carolina. She recently served as PI of an NCI-funded R01 randomized clinical effectiveness trial to determine the effect of self-collection for HPV testing on cervical cancer screening completion in low-income, infrequently screened women in North Carolina. She currently serves as a Co-PI for an NCI-funded multi-center study to develop and validate the use of a Point-of-Care HPV diagnostic test for cervical cancer screening for low and middle-income settings. She serves as a co-investigator for the USAID PEER cluster randomized clinical trial to prevent cervical cancer in Malawi, and as co-investigator on a U54 study to evaluate urine testing for cervical cancer screening in women living with HIV in Malawi and South Africa. As Director of the Cervical Cancer Free Coalition, she convened two national meetings with medical and public health experts to translate research into practice. Dr. Smith has published over three hundred peer-reviewed articles.
