I am Professor of Social Medicine, Fellow of the Carolina Population Center and Center for Health Equity Research (CHER), Associate Director of the Inclusive Science Program for the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). In addition, I serve as co-director of the RADx-UP Coordination and Data Collection Center Community Engagement Core and as the academic co-lead of the Hispanic/Latinx Community Response Team for the North Carolina Community Engagement Alliance (NC CEAL) against Covid-19.

My ongoing research covers Hispanic/Latinx health, the measurement of racial-ethnic health disparities, mixed-methods research in immigration and health, and access to care. I have used qualitative interview, focus group, and survey-based data from studies that I have designed. These include Latino Adolescent Migration, Health, and Adaptation Project, LAMHA; Southern Immigrant Academic Adaptation, SIAA; Salud Infantil) or co-designed (Hispanic Community Health Study of Latinos, HCHS/SOL; Hispanic Community Health Study of Latino Youth, SOL-Youth, Sexual and Gender Minorities in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, SGM SOL, as well as other sources, National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, Add Health. Through my experience in primary data collection, I have become an established expert on the recruitment and retention of Hispanic/Latinx and immigrant population samples, and on mixed-methods research, and I study a wide range of health outcomes (e.g. anxiety, depression, obesity, diabetes). I often collaborate and publish with multidisciplinary teams. I am also nationally recognized as an engaged scholar: I apply my knowledge and expertise to assist schools, local, state and federal government committees, and nonprofit associations across the US.
