Dr. Leah Ranney is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Director for Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program (TPEP). She holds a PhD in psychology from North Carolina State University and has 22 years of experience in public health research focused on tobacco prevention and control and more recently tobacco regulatory science.
As Director for the TPEP, Dr. Ranney manages a diverse portfolio of funded projects and supervises multiple research staff. She currently manages state contracts to evaluate the QuitlineNC services, NC Youth Tobacco survey data analysis, and the NC Tobacco Free Generation social media dissemination project.
Dr. Ranney is currently an MPI on a funded NIH grant aimed to improve the effectiveness of warnings for little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs) among youth who currently use, have ever used, or are susceptible to using LCCs, especially Black/African American youth. She is also a co-investigator on a funded NIH grant which focuses on communicating cancer and other health risks of LCCs through the development of novel warning labels. Dr. Ranney intends to expand her tobacco regulatory science expertise developing effective tobacco warnings to cannabis research and regulations including strengthening product warnings.
