My laboratory studies the basic biology and pathogenesis of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the Non Tuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM) Mycobacterium abscessus. Topics under investigation include cell wall biogenesis, protein secretion pathways, and functional characterization of virulence factors. We additionally have collaborative drug discovery projects and projects investigating alternate drug delivery strategies (e.g., aerosolized drugs and long-acting injectable drug formulations) to treat mycobacterial disease. We also study the potential of using mycobacteriophages to treat mycobacterial infections. My research program includes cell culture and animal models of mycobacterial infection, performed in Biosafety Level 2 and Biosafety Level 3 facilities.
