My research focuses on the transmission and prevention of transmission of microbial pathogens. I helped to develop laboratory methods to measure HIV in genital secretions, as well as methods to determine the best antiviral agents to reduce replication of HIV in these compartments. I was Principal Investigator of the multinational HPTN 052 trial, which demonstrated that antiretroviral treatment of people with HIV infection prevents the sexual transmission of the virus. This work was recognized by Science Magazine as the “Breakthrough of the Year” in 2011. More recently i have served as a Co-PI of the NIH HIV Prevention Network (HPTN) and COVID Prevention Network (CoVPN). Through these networks we developed biologic agents for the prevention of HIV (pre-exposure prophylaxis) including oral agents, injectable small molecules and monoclonal antibody cocktails. My work on COVID included development of vaccine trial strategies and monoclonal antibodies for prevention.
