I am a family physician, geriatrician and health services researcher, with expertise in clinical care, education, and research related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. As a clinician, I have served as a nursing home medical director, as a national advisor on dementia care for a large nursing home chain, and as a provider in a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. As a researcher, my focus for over 30 years has been care of older persons, with emphasis on long-term care settings and persons with dementia. I have been continuously funded for research work since 1986 and have received the Pioneer Award from the United States Alzheimer’s Association and a senior leadership academic award from the NIA. I have extensive experience directing and participating in multidisciplinary teams, conducting research with providers in medical practices and long-term care settings, mounting clinical trials, recruiting and retaining subjects in clinical studies, measuring physical function and health outcomes, and disseminating research findings to diverse audiences. My longstanding research interests in the quality of long-term care, geriatric medicine, and management of behavioral symptoms in persons with dementia.
