Dr. Layton is an education researcher whose research focuses on doctoral and postdoctoral biomedical education and training, graduate career and professional development outcomes, and biomedical workforce development. Her role as Associate Chair of Education and Training identifying core competencies and curriculum alignment, intersects with her examination of core competencies across the 15 departments in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) as part of the NSF-funded MyPhD Program. In addition, her previous role working with graduate students as the Director of Professional Development Programs in the UNC SOM Biomedical Science Training and Research (BioSTAR) Office informs her examination of education, training, and workforce development as part of the NIGMS-funded SCISIPBIO Program. She holds an Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, an Associate Professor appointment in the School of Education, and serves as the BioSTAR Faculty Advisor for Career Development. She co-directs the Certificate in College Science Teaching (https://collegescienceteaching.web.unc.edu/), teaches the biostatistics for laboratory scientists course (BBSP 710: https://bbsp710.web.unc.edu/), and is also an ICF-credentialled Professional Certified Coach. Her recent publications examine graduate student mental health, career self-efficacy, intersectional identities, program evaluation tools, as well as program and course development and assessment.
