I am the Executive Director for the Collaborative for Maternal and Infant Health in the OB/GYN and Pediatrics Department in the SOM as well as the Director of the Jordan Institute for Families in the School of Social Work and Co-Principal Investigator for the Maternal Health Learning and Innovation Center at the Gillings School of Public Health. I help manage prevention programs that serve clinics across North Carolina, serve on policy teams such as the Child Fatality Task Force, and have convened statewide coalitions to address maternal and infant mortality disparities. My edited the books include Making Change Happen: Moving Lifecourse from Theory to Action (APHA Press, 2018)) which focused on MCH practitioners and Preconception Health and Care: A Lifecourse Perspective, was released in August 2020. Dr. Verbiest co-edited the 4th Edition of the Maternal and Child Health textbook that was released in 2021 and the Maternal Health Playbook will be released online later this year. I serve on the steering committee for the HRSA MCHB Lifecourse Intervention Research Network and lead the national Show Your Love campaign. Research interests include reproductive and preconception health for women with chronic conditions, perinatal care, particularly postpartum and interconception health, maternal and infant mortality prevention, community engagement, social determinants of health among other areas.
