Maureen M. Petersen, MD, FACAAI, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy/Immunology has been inducted as Vice President of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI). The induction took place during the College’s national meeting in Orlando, Florida.
This appointment marks the beginning of a three-year leadership commitment within ACAAI, during which Dr. Petersen will serve sequentially as Vice President, President-Elect, and ultimately President of the College. ACAAI is one of the nation’s premier professional organizations representing allergists and immunologists, dedicated to advancing clinical excellence, education, advocacy, and research in the field.
The mission of ACAAI is to promote excellence in the practice of allergy and immunology, foster collaboration among specialists, and improve the quality of life for patients through education, advocacy, and innovation. The College serves as a leading voice for the specialty, guiding national initiatives that enhance patient care and professional development.
Dr. Petersen came to UNC in 2024 after retiring as a Colonel from the US Army. She received her BS from the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, VA and her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), in Bethesda, MD in 1998. Dr. Petersen completed her pediatric residency at the Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI in 2001 and her allergy/immunology fellowship at the National Capital Consortium – Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC in 2009.
Dr. Petersen’s election to this role reflects her longstanding dedication to the specialty of Allergy and Immunology, her leadership in clinical practice, and her commitment to mentoring and educating the next generation of specialists. Through this position, she will help shape national strategies that elevate patient outcomes and advance the profession, while bringing continued recognition to UNC’s growing impact in this discipline.
