The UNC Department of Pediatrics is pleased to welcome Haley Jutras-Smith, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC/AC, who joins us as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, the newest member of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care team.

Haley brings extensive experience in pediatric critical care, with a strong focus on neonatal and cardiac populations. She most recently served as a Nurse Practitioner in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Duke University Hospital, where she provided comprehensive care to critically ill neonates in a Level IV NICU and contributed to initiatives supporting the development of a specialized Cardiac NICU.

Prior to her work at Duke, Haley practiced in pediatric palliative medicine at Cook Children’s Medical Center, delivering holistic, family-centered care for children with life-threatening conditions and guiding complex goals-of-care discussions. Earlier in her career, she worked in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at UT Southwestern/Children’s Medical Center Dallas, managing highly specialized care for patients with complex congenital heart disease and transplant needs.

Haley earned her Master of Science in Nursing with a focus in Primary and Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the University of Tennessee and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island. She holds dual certification as both a Primary Care and Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Her clinical interests include neonatal and cardiac critical care, palliative care, and supporting families through complex medical decision-making. Haley is actively involved in professional organizations and educational initiatives, including serving as an End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) trainer.
