Jaspers Earns 2024 Society of Toxicology Education Award

The Society of Toxicology has selected Dr. Ilona Jaspers to receive the 2024 Society of Toxicology Education Award. Ilona Jaspers, PhD is a Professor of Pediatrics, Microbiology & Immunology, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The annual Society of Toxicology Education Award is presented to an individual who is distinguished by the teaching and training of toxicologists and who has made significant contributions to education in the broad field of toxicology.

Joyner & Savoldo Awarded Distinguished Professorships

Two Pediatrics faculty members were recently awarded distinguished professorships by vote of the Board of Trustees for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Appointment to a distinguished professorship is one of the highest faculty honors the University can bestow. Faculty recognized with distinguished professorships have shown distinction and leadership in their field or across disciplines. Distinguished awards allocate funds and an honorary title to the recipients. Congratulations Dr. Joyner and Dr. Savoldo.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Martin Moya, MD, MPH, MHS

January 15, 2024

Dr. Moya joined the Department of Pediatrics as Professor with the Neonatalogy group in the Wilmington Pediatric Specialty division on January 15, 2024. Dr. Monya recently relocated to the United States from Argentina with his wife and 3 children. He received his medical degree and other post-graduate degrees from the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, completed his pediatric residency at National Hospital of Pediatrics (Hospital Garrahan) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and completed his subspecialty training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, with additional post-graduate training at the Duke University Medical Center. Welcome Martin!

Chris Falato New Assistant Director of Children’s Pharmacy Services for Triangle West

Chris Falato, PharmD has accepted the offer to serve as the Assistant Director of Children’s Pharmacy Services for Triangle West. In this role, Chris will oversee all pharmacy services for the NC Children’s Hospital, Children’s Raleigh, and the UNC Youth Behavioral Health Hospital. Chris will also be integrally involved in the development and planning of the new UNC Health Children’s Hospital campus in Wake County.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Jordan Pung, MD

January 8, 2024

Dr. Pung joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor on January 8, 2024. Dr. Pung received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from North Carolina State University and completed his medical degree at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He was a Pediatric Resident, subsequently Chief Resident, and finally a Pediatric Critical Care Fellow at Duke University. Welcome Jordan!

Welcome New Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner: Amanie Khairullah, PharmD

Amanie Khairullah joined UNC Children’s as a Clinical Pharmacist working with Pediatric Endocrinology in January 2024. She completed her undergraduate and doctoral degrees at UNC Chapel Hill, followed by residency training at Wake Med and UNC Children’s. Welcome Amanie!!

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Benjamin Bowden, MSN, FNP

Benjamin Bowden, MSN, FNP, joined the Wilmington Pediatric Hospitalists group as a Nurse Practitioner on January 8, 2024. Most recently, Benjamin has worked at Seaside Pediatrics. He received his Master’s degree from the Chamberlain University and earned his BSN and undergraduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Welcome Ben!

Lawrence and Jain Named Co-Associate Chairs for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We are pleased to announce that, Dr. Christian Lawrence, Assistant Professor in Hospital Pediatrics, and Dr. Nina Jain, Professor in Endocrinology, began their service as Co-Associate Chairs for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on January 1, 2024. Christian and Nina will bring their unique experiences, energy, and commitment to bear in supporting the department’s goals. We are excited to work with both of these exceptional faculty members in this important role for the Department of Pediatrics.

Jain Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Nina Jain, MD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective January 1, 2024. Dr. Jain has been a faculty member in Pediatric Endocrinology since 2008. Dr. Jain is a pediatric endocrinologist whose research interests focus on type 1 and type 2 diabetes, particularly as it relates to clinical management and quality improvement measures.
