Funding for Global Health Scholarly Work

UNC Pediatrics in Malawi | Dr. Tisu Mavalo (11.26.2019)

Dr. Tisu Mvalo is an Assistant Research Professor of Pediatrics at UNC as well as the in-country Pediatric Director of UNC Project Malawi. He practices clinically at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi and he also provides on-the-ground mentorship for the rotating learners. Dr. Mvalo is the PI in several ongoing research studies at UNC Project Malawi, including the Innovative Treatment in Pneumonia (ITIP) trials and Tuberculosis Meningitis trials.

Gratitude In Action: One Doctor, One Hospital, One Million Patients

Dr. Tom Catena, MD from Duke, is the only physician for a population of more than 750,000 in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains, a conflict zone where humanitarian aid is restricted. At the Mother of Mercy Hospital, founded in 2007, he treats as many as 400 patients a day and is on call around the clock. Treating casualties of the region’s civil war, he performs more than 1000 operations each year, often without running water or electricity.
