Pediatric Cardiology offers modern, comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with known or suspected heart disease. Providers offer consultations, comprehensive diagnostics, and therapeutic services for unborn babies, infants, children and adolescents with cardiac conditions. Care is delivered in Chapel Hill as well as convenient clinics located throughout the state. Specialists provide cardiac services via a network of outpatient clinics extending across North Carolina. UNC Children’s Opens Dedicated Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
UNC Children’s celebrated the opening of its new 13-bed Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit on May 18. The dedicated unit brings together specialized teams, advanced technology, and expanded capacity to care for children with complex heart conditions. The milestone reflects continued investment in high-quality, family-centered pediatric care across North Carolina.

Hartman Promoted to Professor
Robert Hartman, MD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective August 1, 2021. Dr. Hartman has been a faculty member in Pediatric Cardiology since 2018. Congratulations!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Christopher Atkins, MD, MS
Dr. Atkins joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor in the division of Pediatric Cardiology on August 11, 2025. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2011 at Vanderbilt University, a Master’s in medical sciences at University of South Florida in 2012, and earned is medical degree in 2018 at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Atkins completed his pediatric residency at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2022, remaining for a year as Chief Resident. He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Duke University Children’s Hospital in June 2025. Welcome Chris!

Cotton Named Pediatric Associate Vice Chair of Outreach Initiatives
Dr. John Cotton, Professor of Pediatrics, has been named the Associate Vice Chair of Outreach Initiatives for the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Cotton has been a Pediatric Cardiologist at UNC Children’s since 1996, practicing in multiple sites across the state. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, medical school at State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse, and both his residency and fellowship at the University of California – UCLA Children’s Hospital. Please congratulate Dr. Cotton on this new and important new role.
