Early Check Study to Use Genome Sequencing to Dramatically Expand Voluntary Screening Offered for NC Newborns

This RTI/UNC-Chapel Hill collaboration will be the first US study offering genome sequencing and genetic risk scores for type 1 diabetes statewide. UNC School of Medicine leads are Cynthia Powell, MD and Jennifer Law, MD in Pediatrics. Early Check, a groundbreaking research study that provides free health tests to newborns up to four weeks old in North Carolina, will begin offering genome sequencing to screen for hundreds of childhood-onset genetic conditions and assess a newborn’s risk of developing type 1 diabetes in their lifetime. Enrollment for the expanded study is expected to begin Thursday, Sept. 28.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Rebecca Vitale, MD, MPH

Rebecca Vitale, MD, MPH joined the Pediatric Division of Endocrinology on September 1, 2023. Dr. Vitale completed her medical degree from Yale University in 2015. She also earned a Masters of Public Health from Yale concurrent with her medical degree. She was a Med/Peds Resient between 2015 and 2019 at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Dr. Vitale completed her Internal Medicine-Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship from 2019 through 2023 at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston children’s Hospital. Welcome Rebecca!!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Sara H. Duffus, MD

March 1, 2023

Sara Duffus joined the Division of Endocrinology as an Assistant Professor on March 1, 2023. Dr. Duffus earned her MD at the Wake Forest School of Medicine in 2015.  She completed her pediatric residency with us at UNC Children’s in 2018, followed by a pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Vanderbilt University Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. Welcome back, Sara!

Law Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Jennifer Law, MD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective February 1, 2023. Dr. Law has been a faculty member in Pediatric Endocrinology since 2013. Dr. Law is a pediatric endocrinologist whose research interests focus on clinical management and comorbidities of type 1 diabetes and Turner syndrome.

Jain Certified as Lifestyle Medicine Physician

Dr. Nina Jain, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, in the Division of Endocrinology has recently been certified as a Lifestyle Medicine Physician through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Lifestyle medicine certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Camilia Kamoun, MD, MSME

Camilia Kamoun joined the Division of Endocrinology as an Assistant Professor on September 1, 2022. Dr. Kamoun earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016. Dr. Kamoun completed a Pediatric Residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2019 and a Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2022. Also, in 2022 Dr. Kamoun completed her Masters Degree in Medical Ethics at the University of Pennsylvania. Welcome Camilia!

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Taylor Murphy MSN, FNP BC, CDE

Taylor Murphy joined Pediatric Endocrinology on November 29th. Ms. Murphy received her BSN from Duke University in 2010 and went on to complete her MSN at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing in 2015. Since 2017, she has worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Mount Sinai Hospital Hall Center for Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes in New York.  Welcome Taylor!

Welcome New Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology
