Welcome New Clinical Provider: Lindsay Dyer, MSN, PNP

June 12, 2023

Lindsay Dyer, MSN, PNP joined Hematology-Oncology on June 12, 2023. Lindsay began working at UNC Children’s as a Registered Nurse/Certified Pediatric Nurse in 2015. She earned her Masters of Science in Nursing from UNC-Chapel Hill in May of 2021. Since graduating she has worked as a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and BMT Nurse Practitioner Fellow at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston and a Pediatric Transplant and Cellular Therapy Nurse Practitioner at Duke. Welcome back Lindsay!

Li Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Chengwen Li, PhD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Li has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2010. Dr. Li is member of the Gene Therapy Center and is an internationally recognized expert in adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors for gene therapy.

Smitherman Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

March 1, 2023

Andrew Smitherman, MD, MSc was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective March 1, 2023. Dr. Smitherman has been a faculty member in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology since 2017. Dr. Smitherman is the Medical Director of the UNC Adolescents and Young Adults Oncology Program.

Thompson & Westmoreland Receive Caregiver @ Carolina Awards

Peyton Thompson, MD, MSCR, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the division of Infectious Diseases, and Kate Westmoreland, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the division of Hematology-Oncology, have both received 2023 Caregivers at Carolina Research Awards.

Ian Davis Awarded $1 Million by V Foundation

January 17, 2023

The V Foundation Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board has awarded funding to Ian Davis, MD, PhD, the G. Denman Hammond Professor of Childhood Cancer in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and a UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center member, for his research project, “Novel mechanisms to improve CAR-T cell therapy for pediatric solid tumors”. The award is being funded by the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. The award amount will total $1,000,000, over the next 5 years.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Catherine Habashy, MD, MPH

September 1, 2022

Catherine Habashy joined the Division of Hematology-Oncology as an Assistant Professor on September 1, 2022. Dr. Habashy earned her medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 2007.  Catherine completed her Med/Peds Residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington in 2011.  Subsequently, she earned her Masters in Public Health from New York University in 2015, her Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the University of Tennessee in 2017, and her Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology here at UNC Children’s in 2022. Congratulations Catherine!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: David Kram, MD, MCR, FAAP

On July 1, 2022, Dr. David Kram joined the Division of Hematology-Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics as an Associate Professor .  Dr. Kram received his MD from Tel Aviv University in Tel Avivi, Israel in 2010. Welcome David!

Academy of Educators – Recent Pediatric Inductees and Accomplishments

Founded in 2006, the Academy of Educators is designed to emphasize teaching and support faculty development both in Chapel Hill and across the state.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Maria Boucher, MD

January 1, 2022

Dr. Boucher joined the Division of Hematology/Oncology on January 1, 2022.  She received her from BS Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in 2006 and her medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico in 2010. In 2013, she completed her pediatric residency at Tufts Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA and her fellowship in Hematology/Oncology was completed at UNC Chapel Hill in 2016. Dr. Boucher has since been an Assistant Professor at the Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.  Welcome back Maria!
