Dr. Adriana Herrera, Assistant Professor in Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and Dr. Jasmine Weiss, Assistant Professor in General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine have been selected to be a part of the 2022-2023 Passing the Torch Cohort. Both are true assets to our health care system and to the UNC Department of Pediatrics!
Passing the Torch is a faculty development program uniquely suited to junior Clinician Educator faculty to develop further patient care and teaching skills with a person-centered model. Supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Passing the Torch program strives to equip faculty with a variety of humanistic skills through experiential learning methods. As one of twelve participating program sites, the UNC School of Medicine is part of a larger cohort of medical institutions working toward helping faculty become better role models. Sites are in the process of evaluating program outcomes and hope to publish their learnings.

Dr. Emiliee Lewis, Assistant Professor in the division of Hospital Pediatrics, has been asked to serve as UNC site lead for the American Academy of Pediatrics VIP Network Project: Learning and Implementing Guidelines for Hyperbilirubinemia Treatment (LIGHT). The project seeks to implement the AAP Clinical Practice Guideline
Meg Kihlstrom, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Critical Care Medicine, and Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hospital Pediatrics, have been awarded the Denny, Simon, Tingelstad Academic Service Award from the North Carolina Pediatric Society in recognition of their work with the Pediatric Residency Program at UNC.
Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, has been elected President of the North Carolina Pediatric Society (NCPeds), the state chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Ashely Sutton, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, with a team of from across the UNC Children’s Hospital has recently published Systematic Improvement in the Patient Transfer Process to a Tertiary Care Children’s Hospital in Hospital Pediatrics. This study shares the efforts to improve the operational efficiency of communicating with outside physicians or APPs who need to transfer patients to UNC Children’s.
