Welcome New Physician Faculty: Martin Moya, MD, MPH, MHS

January 15, 2024

Dr. Moya joined the Department of Pediatrics as Professor with the Neonatalogy group in the Wilmington Pediatric Specialty division on January 15, 2024. Dr. Monya recently relocated to the United States from Argentina with his wife and 3 children. He received his medical degree and other post-graduate degrees from the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, completed his pediatric residency at National Hospital of Pediatrics (Hospital Garrahan) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and completed his subspecialty training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, with additional post-graduate training at the Duke University Medical Center. Welcome Martin!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Jordan Pung, MD

January 8, 2024

Dr. Pung joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor on January 8, 2024. Dr. Pung received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from North Carolina State University and completed his medical degree at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He was a Pediatric Resident, subsequently Chief Resident, and finally a Pediatric Critical Care Fellow at Duke University. Welcome Jordan!

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Benjamin Bowden, MSN, FNP

Benjamin Bowden, MSN, FNP, joined the Wilmington Pediatric Hospitalists group as a Nurse Practitioner on January 8, 2024. Most recently, Benjamin has worked at Seaside Pediatrics. He received his Master’s degree from the Chamberlain University and earned his BSN and undergraduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Welcome Ben!

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Morgan Such, MSN, PNP-AC/PC

Morgan Such, PNP, joined the Wilmington Pediatric Hospitalists group as a Nurse Practitioner on December 11, 2023. Most recently, Morgan has been a Nurse Practitioner the PICU at ECU Health and was previously a nurse with UNC Children’s on the Hem/Onc/Bone Marrow Transplant service. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2022 and her BSN from Clemson University in 2016. Welcome Morgan!

RSV cases surge in southeastern North Carolina

COVID, the flu and RSV are often referred to as the trifecta of seasonal illnesses. But one of the viruses is spreading faster around the Cape Fear than the others. Doctors say they are seeing more patients with RSV than any other illness this time of year. A new preventive antibody to protect newborns against RSV is a step toward a healthier future. “The goal is to try and minimize how many babies are hospitalized,” said Dr. Lauren Rust, pediatric medical director for Novant Health and Assistant Professor with UNC Department of Pediatrics. But the new vaccine called Beyfortus, is in short supply. Rust says for now, the vaccine will be prioritized for high-risk patients. Those are newborns with underlying conditions, pregnant mothers and newborns six months or younger.

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Jordan Lewis, NNP

Jordan Lewis, NNP, joined the Wilmington Peds group in Neonatology as a Nurse Practitioner in November 2023. Jordan has been an RN in the NICU since 2018 and just recently graduated with her Master’s from East Carolina University. She will be primarily assisting the team at Novant New Hanover. 2023 Novant Health – UNC Partnership Fall Retreat

November 11, 2023

Beginning November 10, 2023, physicians, local leaders, and members from Novant Health, UNC Health and the UNC School of Medicine attended a two-day conference to focus on the partnership between the organizations. Kody Kinsley, North Carolina’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, spoke at the conference where participants refocused on the common goals of advanced clinical research, academic development, and clinical services. The clinical care partnership has been focused on children’s specialty care. We’ve been transforming access and availability of children specially care so that families who need some special consultation for their kids don’t have to drive to the triangle to get that. UNC Children’s and Novant are now able to offer that such specialty care locally now and with short-term appointment times, less than 2 or 3 weeks for new appointments.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Yvette B. Chop, MD, MPH

Dr. Chop joined the Department of Pediatrics as faculty in October, 2023. Dr. Chop received her BS from the University of Maryland in 2011, completed her medical degree at Saint James School of Medicine, Anguilla in 2016, and earned a master’s in public health at Walden University, Minnesota in 2017. She was a Pediatric Resident at the Vidant Medical Center at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC from 2017 to 2020. She completed subspecialty training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/The Ohio State University in 2023. Welcome Yvette!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Jack K. Sharp, MD, CM

Dr. Sharp joined the Department of Pediatrics as faculty on July 31, 2023. Dr. Sharp completed his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1989. He was a Pediatric Intern at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1989 to 1990 and a Pediatric Resident and then Chief Resident at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at the Pennsylvania State University from 1990 to 1993. He completed subspecialty training in Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, WI in 1996. Dr. Sharp has held faculty positions at the Medical College of Virginia, the State University of New York at Buffalo, Duke University, and most recently at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Tangredi Uses Her Past to Help Patients Have a Positive Future

Dr. Christine Tangredi, a child neurologist in Wilmington, is using her own personal experience with a neurological disorder to help children and families in the community. She specializes in working with children with neurologic disorders including epilepsy at the Novant Health Nunnelee Pediatric Multispeciality Care Clinic at Autumn Hall.
