Emergency Medicine
Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides the highest quality and technologically advanced emergency medical care to ill and injured children in the Triangle area, as well as throughout the state. UNC Children’s Emergency Department offers a full range of primary, tertiary, and quaternary subspecialty care attached to the Triangle’s only Level I pediatric trauma center (one of only 41 in the nation). Providers also care for children in the UNC Children’s Urgent Care at Raleigh. UNC Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians are committed to quality improvement and help lead the department in ongoing improvement and standardization of our clinical processes.

Zargham Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics
Shiva Zargham, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective January 1, 2025. Dr. Zargham has been a faculty member in Pediatric Emergency Medicine since 2019. Congratulations!

UNC Children’s Urgent Care Voted Silver Medalist in 2024 Raleigh’s Best
We are excited to share that UNC Children’s Urgent Care at Raleigh was voted the #2 Urgent Care/Walk-In Clinic in the greater Raleigh area, the only pediatric urgent care ranked on the list. Raleigh’s Best, a publication of the News & Observer, recently published the 2024 edition of the Best of Raleigh. Welcome New Physician Faculty: Maura Olcese, MD
Dr. Maura Olcese joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Emergency Medicine on September 14, 2024.Dr. Olcese received her bachelor degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 2008. She earned her medical degree and a masters degree in epidemiology and biostatistics from Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, in 2017. She completed her internship with Ventura County Family Medicine and completed her Pediatric Residency with the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center in Oakland, CA in 2020. She completed a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship with UNC/Wake Med in Raleigh in 2024. Welcome Maura!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Kristen Capito, DO
Dr. Kristen Capito joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Emergency Medicine on August 19, 2024. Dr. Capito received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in Cognitive Science from the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA in 2008. She earned her DO from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, in 2016. Additionally, she completed her Pediatric Residency with the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC in 2019, and recently graduated from her Pediatric Fellowship in Emergency Medicine with the University of Tennessee’s Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital partnership in Memphis, TN.
