The Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was established to advance research, treatment, and support for individuals with Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and related lysosomal storage disorders. Founded in November 2022, the Center was developed under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Muenzer, a pioneering expert in MPS, with a mission to address the complex needs of MPS patients and their families. Although the new clinic space was unveiled in November 2024, the Muenzer MPS Center team has been active in clinical care and clinical trials for MPS for many years.

Our center offers the following specialized services through consultations:

  • Evaluation and Management: Comprehensive assessments and ongoing care for MPS individuals with MPS.
  • Genetic Counseling: Helping individuals and families make informed decisions about their health and family planning through comprehensive support, education, and guidance on the genetic and psychosocial implications of MPS.
  • Enzyme Replacement Therapy/Infusion Therapy: Treatment options to help slow disease progression. The center has dedicated pediatric-friendly infusion rooms and a staff of specially trained nurses/providers to administer these therapies.
  • Comprehensive Developmental Testing: Assessing developmental, cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive skill profiles of individuals with MPS.
  • Clinical Trials:  Learn more about investigational therapies and opportunities to participate in clinical trials. Learn about clinical trials occurring at the Muenzer MPS Center.
