Provider and Parent with ChildAs of January 1, 2022, Coastal Children’s Services and Coastal Carolina Neonatology is providing care as part of the UNC Health Children’s team. UNC Health Children’s in Wilmington, serves patients up to age 18 with complex conditions in multiple hospitals and outpatient clinics across southeastern North Carolina in the areas of Pediatric Cardiology, Critical Care, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Neonatology, Neurology, Pulmonology and Newborn Care. Our caring and compassionate pediatric professionals are trained for all levels of treatment required by young patients. We are continuously growing our network of specialized care providers to increase our value as a trusted source for parents in North Carolina. Our focus on continuing education and innovative care models enables us to provide our patients with standardized, high quality care.

    Welcome New Clinical Provider: Ellie Mears Ward, MSN, NNP

    Ellie Mears Ward, NNP, is a new Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at the Novant Brunswick location. She received her bachelors of science in nursing in 2013 and her masters in nursing in 2018, both from East Carolina University. She’s had experience at the Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA and Fairfax Neonatal Associates in Fairfax, VA. Welcome Ellie!

    Welcome New Physician Faculty: Travis Kauffmann, MD

    Dr. Travis Kaufmann joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor with the Critical Care group in the Wilmington Pediatric Specialty division on August 30, 2024. Dr. Kauffman received her Bachelors degree from North Carolina State University in Raleigh NC in 2008. He completed a Masters of Public Health degree from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 2010. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 2016. He completed residency at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in 2019 and his fellowship in Pediatric Neurocritical Care Medicine from University of Rochester, Rochester, NY in June of 2024.     Dr. Jill Kaufmann joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Assistant Professor with the Hospitalist group in the Wilmington Pediatric Specialty division on August 26, 2024. Dr. Kauffman received her Bachelors degree from Meredith College in Raleigh NC in 2009 and earned her Doctor of Medicine from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 2016. She completed her residency at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. She has had recent experience with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and the Christiana Care Hospital in Newark, Delaware, Welcome Jill!

  • UNC - Novant Clinical Trials Leaders

    Novant Health, UNC Health and UNC School of Medicine collaborative awards $1 million to launch two clinical trials in North Carolina

    A $1 million investment will launch two physician-led clinical research efforts in North Carolina to grow medical knowledge by seeking to answer pressing questions.

    The pair of $500,000 research grants focusing on urgent health needs marks the largest single investment awarded by the collaborative involving Novant Health, UNC Health and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The funding will launch joint Novant Health and UNC School of Medicine studies focusing on treatments for patients with pediatric asthma and advanced prostate cancer.
