Right to Refuse Treatment

In general, everyone has a right to determine what happens to them. The commitment laws described above are exceptions that are intended to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and others. In the outpatient setting, an individual has the right to refuse medications. In the inpatient setting, patients can refuse medications except in emergencies and in specific instances defined by state law.
