Crystal Schiller, PhD

Director, UNC Center for Women’s Mood Disorders

Dr. Schiller’s NIH-funded research program investigates how changes in ovarian steroid hormones contribute to depression and anxiety across the reproductive lifespan—from puberty through the menopause transition. Her work integrates neuroscience, endocrinology, and clinical psychology to identify the biological and behavioral mechanisms that underlie women’s mood symptoms.

Dr. Sikes-Keilp’s current research explores the role of estradiol and progesterone in modulating the brain’s reward system in women with premenstrual exacerbations of major depression. His interests include the development of tools to predict symptoms and treatment response in reproductive mood disorders, as well as the use of novel interventional treatments in women with refractory mental illness. Outside of research, Dr. Sikes-Keilp enjoys playing music and being in nature with his two dogs.
