A classic battle between Duke and UNC this year occurred off the court and in the Raleigh Food Bank.  The opportunity to aid those in need at the Raleigh Food Bank gave both members of UNC and Duke SNMA and UNC SBBS a chance to involve themselves in the community.  Not only is this a critical aspect of the SBBS mission, but should be ingrained in all members who participate in SBBS. Members were given the task of packing and sorting capri suns, sweet potatoes, onions and various other food supplies.  This offered members of SNMA and SBBS a great opportunity to collaborate and network with leaders from the different organizations represented while also fulfilling those in need with the help they require.  It is not often that you see training scientists and aspiring physicians working to close the gap in food insecurity.

This event was the ideation of the Outreach and Social Action Committee, however it would not have been possible without Dillion Strepay and his team of SNMA members.  Dillion is a 2nd year medical student and President of the Student National Medical Association UNC Chapter.  Through this initiative participants were able to pack over 4 tons of food supplies together. But again this is a classic matchup, so you know they had to make it a competition. After calculation, UNC SNMA and SBBS managed to pack 3,299 lbs of food supplies. Unfortunately though, that was not enough to out pack the Blue Devils as the stored away 5,559 lbs. The SBBS executive board and members look forward to collaborating with other groups in the future and hope to help the community in a number of other ways as well.
