Thomas M. Egan, MD, MSc., spoke at a Lung Transplant Summit hosted by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on Feb. 24, 2016, in Bethesda, MD. He was one of 20 experts in lung transplantation and/or cystic fibrosis who were invited to the meeting. The participants will help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation come up with a strategy to improve outcomes of lung transplant for CF patients by providing more CFF support for lung transplant care and research.

The summit included presentations and discussion on patient referral and organ allocation, best practices for post-transplant care, understanding chronic infections and their role in allograft dysfunction, identifying biomarkers for rejection and tolerance, topics related to transplant immunology, and developing new model systems.

Dr. Egan gave a presentation on “What are the opportunities to expand the donor pool?” Dr. Egan has been principal investigator of project funded by the National Institutes of Health to study assessment and transplantation of lungs from victims of sudden death. He is internationally known for his research on lung transplantation.
