September 16, 2011 — The North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Surgeons has posted the following article in the Sept. 16 issue of its electronic newsletter, E-News:
Timothy Michael Farrell, MD, FACS, began his term as secretary/treasurer in July on the North Carolina Chapter, ACS Board, and we would like to give members an insight into his background with this short history of Dr. Farrell’s career.
Dr. Farrell earned his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ, and his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center before completing a fellowship at Emory University.
Currently, Dr. Farrell serves as chief of GI surgery’s minimally invasive surgery service, director of the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, director of the Advanced GI Surgery Fellowship program, surgery clerkship director, and chair of the department’s education committee at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Last fall, he was awarded the prestigious H. Fleming Fuller Award from the UNC Health Care Board, and he was promoted to professor of surgery in July.
He is recognized by peers as an excellent clinician and patient advocate, a proficient teacher, and a recognized clinical researcher. Through his humble attitude, calm demeanor, intellectual curiosity about what matters to each individual patient outside of just their illness, solid core values, and personal qualities as a kind human being, his patients encounter more than a good surgeon. They find a respectful and respected friend to share values with, to trust, to learn from, to listen, and to attend to various avenues of need related to non-surgical as well as surgical matters.
