- Abdominal Transplant
The University of North Carolina is home to one of the most accomplished and dedicated transplant teams in the region. Certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, our mission is the advancement of transplantation and clinical outcomes through efforts in education, research, and clinical medicine. Our programs provide comprehensive treatment for kidney, liver, and pancreas. - Burn Center
The North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center combines the expertise of multiple UNC specialists with the state-of-the-art facilities and technologies at UNC Health Care to provide our patients with the very best in high quality and compassionate care. We are a 36-bed facility that is one of the few in the nation that is American Burn Association verified for adult and pediatric care. Our mission does not stop with treating just the visible injuries of the burn patient; it goes well beyond the physical to providing occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, pastoral support, aftercare, and laser treatment of scars. - Cardiothoracic Surgery
Each year, our surgeons perform more than 900 major operations on hearts, lungs or other areas of the chest. Since our program began in 1952, diagnostic techniques, surgical knowledge, and postoperative care have changed and improved. One thing has stayed the same: our strong commitment to excellent care of our patients before, during, and after surgery. To improve health care in the future, our physicians are involved in cutting-edge research and technological advancements in noninvasive procedures. We are one of the best cardiothoracic departments in the country and continue to strive for improvement. - Gastrointestinal Surgery
The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery is a highly regarded clinical program that spans an array of diseases of the GI tract. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines, as well as the liver, pancreas and gallbladder. These organs create the digestive system that works together to break down the food we eat, gathering the nutrients our body needs. If patients experience problems with their digestive system that require surgery, they can trust the experts at UNC Surgery to provide effective treatment to relieve their symptoms and help them improve their quality of life. - General and Acute Care Surgery
The Division of General and Acute Care Surgery cares for trauma patients with multiple injuries and staffs the Surgical Intensive Care Units. We perform a wide range of general surgical procedures including simple and complex hernia repairs, gallbladder surgery, colon surgery, and general abdominal surgeries. In addition, the division cares for the majority of patients in the UNC Health Care System who require treatment in acute surgical emergencies. - Pediatric Surgery
The mission of the Division of General Pediatric Surgery is to treat sick and injured children with the most expert and experienced team and to provide the best care possible in a family-centered, “kid-friendly” environment. We are committed to offering the highest level of pediatric surgical services through fully-trained and board-certified pediatric surgeons, and to provide education to patients, their families, our colleagues, and the community about surgical problems that are unique to children. - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
As a key component of the Department of Surgery, the School of Medicine, and UNC Hospitals, the Division of Plastic Surgery provides superlative care to the community whom we serve. We provide compassionate, efficient, and sustainable health care to individuals with craniofacial deformities such as cleft lip and palate, facial trauma, burn injury, hand disabilities, massive weight loss, defects from cancer, and aesthetic concerns. Excellence in education and research enhance our delivery of the very best medical care, which we provide in an environment that is exceptionally welcoming, collegial, and supportive, both for those receiving and those providing the care. - Surgical Oncology
When patients are diagnosed with cancer, it can be a scary and overwhelming experience. They want the best medical care available and to feel like they have a say in their treatment plan. The doctors of the Division of Surgical Oncology are committed to the multi-disciplinary approach to patient care, providing patients with a compassionate partner who supports them through treatment, recovery, and survivorship. Our patients have access to the nationally recognized surgeons of UNC, as well as the innovative research and groundbreaking clinical trials of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center - Vascular Surgery
The vascular system, also known as the circulatory system, is the network of vessels and tissues that supply the body with blood, oxygen, and lymph. That means a problem in the vascular system can quickly affect organs, including the heart. The vascular surgeons of the UNC Department of Surgery have the expertise, skill, and training to diagnose and treat vascular conditions to keep our patients in their best health.
