The video broadcast focused on the need for an integrated medical approach for osteoarthritis and pain management.

Chronic pain conditions (like arthritis and back pain) are highly common, said Dr. Allen, and can have substantial negative impacts on individuals’ function and quality of life. She also discussed the specific types of non-pharmacological therapies that are known to be the most helpful, and the opportunity to increase use of these treatments among people with chronic pain conditions.

Dr. Allen’s work, both at the UNC Thurston Arthritis Research Center, and with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, has an emphasis on reducing disparities in chronic pain treatment and outcomes.
