Onyinye Iweala, MD, PhDHer research will explore the role of glycolipids and unconventional T cells, with the goal of broadening our understanding of their roles in hypersensitivity disorders.

Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergic condition with global reach.  There are reports from around the world describing patients with delayed allergic reactions to mammalian meat. At this time, we have limited understanding of the mechanisms underlying this condition.

In addition to studying the role glycolipids play regarding this allergy, the new research being led by Dr. Iweala may also link tick exposure to a gene expression and cytokine profile in unconventional T cells that promotes allergic responses.
