Throughout his career, Dr. Joshua Niznik has developed his expertise in pharmacoepidemiology. But Dr. Niznik’s work is also driven by patient stories and interactions. Through interviews with patients, caregivers, and providers, he uncovers insights that lab results and charts can’t reveal.

Another facet of his work involves data analysis. Dr. Niznik reviews Medicare records, electronic health records, and databases from the Veterans Health Administration. As a geriatric health services researcher with clinical training in the pharmaceutical sciences, Dr. Niznik’s focuses on evaluating the quality of medications in older adults. The end goal is improving the safety of medication use in this population.

As Dr. Niznik says, “It’s a lot to take 10 pills. It’s more about personalizing the goals of each of the treatments that they’re receiving so that it’s more aligned with maximizing safety and minimizing risk.”
