UNC Department of Anesthesiology is thrilled to recognize Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Kimberley (“Kim”) Nichols, MD, FASA, for being named the UNC School of Medicine (SOM)’s new Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education. Dr. Nichols’ decade+ at UNC SOM is marked by high achievement, from her earliest years as a learner — medical school (Class of 2000), residency (Co-Chief), fellowship (Pain Management) – to the multitude of high-level leadership posts she has held spanning UNC Anesthesiology, UNC SOM and institutional service.

Over 10 years at UNC, Dr. Nichols’ advancement of the UNC SOM’s and Department’s missions has been widely felt through her contributions as a mentor, leader, and educator. Highlights of her service include: 1) Associate Dean – DEI Faculty Access and Success – UNC SOM Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (2021 – Present); 2) Individualization Phase Co-Director – UNC SOM Office of Medical Education (2020 – Present); 3) Division Chief – UNC General Anesthesia (2013 – 2017); and 4) Medical Director – UNC Anesthesiology Procedural Care Unit and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (2013 – 2017). Well-known for her investment in and engagement of learners, Dr. Nichols was a UNC SOM commencement speaker nominee for the UNC SOM’s May 2022 graduation. She was also elected by the 2021 – 2022 medical student body to serve as one of three honorary faculty “Hooders” at the UNC SOM Class of 2022 graduation ceremony.

Nichols assumes her new role as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education on October 1st, 2022 and will report to UNC SOM Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Jennifer Wu, MD, MPH.

Dr. Wu noted: “Dr. Nichols is a leader in medical education, organizational culture, and equity and inclusion, and she will bring important knowledge and experience to this role. I am excited to work with her as our next Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education.”
