Why I chose UNC: First, every program will tell you “it’s the people” that make the program great, but this rang especially true in every interaction I had with UNC on the interview trail. Next, as someone who participated in the couples match with my wife, it was important to find a program that would set both of us up for successful careers, and we could not have chosen a better program. For me, the wide range of learning opportunities at UNC made it an easy choice, offering everything I need and more to become a well-rounded emergency medicine physician. Lastly, growing up in West Texas, the abundance of readily available outdoor activities drew my wife and me in, as we are huge outdoor enthusiasts.

Why I chose UNC: A tough day with great people can still be a good day. Going into residency interviews, I knew many programs offered excellent training, but I was looking for a supportive environment where I could thrive. During my away rotation at UNC, I found exactly that. I had a meaningful experience, learned a lot, and saw the value of training in a variety of clinical settings. Being close enough to home for the occasional sourdough delivery from my mom is a nice bonus.

Why I chose UNC: Even while working EMS prior to medical school, I really loved the culture at UNC. People were genuinely friendly and wanted the best for their patients. Going to medical school here reinforced that observation. When I knew that I wanted to pursue emergency medicine, I had no doubts that UNC would be at the top of my list. I wanted a place where I could get an outstanding education in EM while also living in a great place to raise a family. Coupled with excellent faculty and a legacy of strong female leadership, UNC checked all the boxes for what I wanted in a program.

Why I Chose UNC: When I was looking at residency programs, the most important thing to me was finding a place where I would feel genuinely supported throughout the challenges of training. During my interview at UNC, I had this gut feeling that I had found that kind of place. The people were genuine, welcoming, and clearly proud of the program. Also, I was drawn to the strong clinical training in both academic and community settings. I could see myself growing here both personally and professionally. The lifestyle in the Triangle also really appealed to me. The weather is great, there is a lot to do outdoors, and it is a comfortable place to live while going through something as intense as residency.

Why I chose UNC: North Carolina will always be home for me. I grew up here and have always loved the culture, the geography, and the bountiful opportunities for both social activities and adventures in nature. The residents, faculty, and other staff at UNC exemplify everything I cherish about the region, with their warm and welcoming attitude, their dedication to their craft and their community, and their ability to have fun while doing it. I am interested in both academic and community hospitals, so I was excited to learn that UNC trains residents at various types of hospitals with different clientele and resources. Residency is challenging by itself, and much more so without the proper support. So when choosing a program, I sought people who would be nice to me, their staff, and their patients at 2 AM. UNC is home to those kinds of people

During my second look, I knew the residents were the kind of people I’d want beside me during the most challenging moments of this job. Emily May
Hometown: Newport News, VA
Undergraduate: University of Virginia
Medical School: University of Virginia
Areas of Interest in EM: Medical Education, Palliative Medicine, EMS
Hobbies: Weight lifting/body building, art (medical illustration and others), video games
Why I chose UNC: I did one of my fourth year rotations at UNC and really enjoyed the area, the faculty, and all of the staff that I encountered at both the UNC Chapel Hill and WakeMed sites. Having experience in multiple roles in Emergency Medicine, I care a lot about the relationships between different professionals within Emergency Medicine (nursing staff, EMS, pharmacy, respiratory therapists, techs, and so on); at both sites, I felt that there was incredible respect and support between peers, which is what I value most in a workplace and hope to contribute to as a doctor! Beyond this, the staff were all incredibly supportive of who I am as a person, and my many scattered interests within the field of medicine. UNC is an institution of diverse expertise which is incredibly encouraging, as they have experts in many subspecialties within and pathways from Emergency Medicine. Beyond feeling confident that UNC would be the best place for me to become a competent and prepared Emergency physician, it was ultimately the inclusive and supportive climate at UNC that made my decision!

Sarah McQueen
Hometown: Burlington, NC
Undergraduate: UNC Chapel Hill
Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Areas of Interest in EM: Global Health, Ultrasound, Wilderness Medicine
Hobbies: Traveling, running, reading, hiking
Why I Chose UNC: As someone born and raised in North Carolina, coming back home was always part of the dream. My time at UNC as an undergrad instilled in me a deep appreciation for this community. After spending several years in West Virginia, I grew passionate about caring for underserved communities, and I was looking for a program that shared that commitment. On interview day, I felt a strong connection to the people here, but it was during my second look that everything really came together. I could see myself growing here, both personally and professionally, surrounded by people who genuinely care. Choosing UNC felt like coming full circle and I couldn’t be more excited to return home and join a program that truly feels like family.

Ryan Peacock
Medical School: Florida State University
Areas of interest for EM: Ultrasound, Tactical medicine, Global Health, wilderness
Hobbies: Guitar, Piano, Golf, Running, any hobby people around me do.
Why I chose UNC: The Peacock family has deep route in NC so UNC has always been on the radar. Couple that with brewing military connections on top of an already existing relationship between attendings at fort Bragg. But most of all, I knew I wanted to go to a program that already meets the tougher standards that are coming to EM residencies while also proving that resident wellness is a top priority. UNC does that while also demonstrating what a top-of-the-line health system looks like.

Why I Chose UNC: Being from eastern NC, I always knew UNC Hospital’s academic reputation, but the kindness and passion of its people is what makes it special. UNC EM proactively supports its residents making it an easy program to find community in addition to all of its academic strengths.
