Voice Disorders

Our voice is one of our most important tools and significantly affects our quality of life. Many people depend on their voices to make a living, and it is often taken for granted until there is a problem. Although we think of professional voice users as singers and actors, a voice disorder would make it difficult for a teacher, salesperson minister, secretary, lawyer, or others to perform his or her job.

Voice disorders can result in a voice that is weak, rough, raspy, breathy, painful, or tires easily. Symptoms lasting more than 2 weeks should be evaluated.

Voice treatment can be divided into 3 categories, medical, behavioral (speech/voice therapy), and surgical. Often, the most effective treatment combines some or all of these measures.

Swallowing Disorders

Swallowing is another function that is key to a good quality of life. Dysphagia, or trouble swallowing, can have a large impact on your nutrition, weight, or risk for pneumonia. It can result from a variety of causes including Zenker’s diverticulum, stroke, age, and radiation treatment.

Breathing Disorders

Trouble breathing can be caused by a variety of body systems including your cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Sometimes, it arises from the upper airway. Stridor, or noisy breathing, is caused by an upper airway disorder. Management of breathing disorders is complex, and often requires a multifaceted approach to ensure continued swallowing and speaking.

Voice, swallowing, and breathing disorders can be evaluated by our highly specialized team.
