Andrea Horimoto, PhD has joined the Department of Genetics as an Assistant Professor.

Drs. Natalie Stanley (secondary), Jerry Guintivano (secondary), and Robbie Mealer (joint) have joined the Department of Genetics.

The Department of Genetics, the Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology (GMB) and the Curriculum in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB) held a scientific retreat on September 29-October 1, 2024, at Myrtle Beach, SC.

Dr. Jason Stein (Associate Professor, Genetics and Neuroscience Center) was awarded a new U01 grant from the National Institute of Aging (NIA) for his project titled “AD GxE: in vivo and in vitro modeling of gene x environment interactions”. 

Matthew Brush, PhD (Assistant Professor, Genetics) is the contact PI for a recently transferred Other Transaction (OT) award from National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).

Parul Johri, PhD (Assistant Professor of Biology and Genetics) received a new R35 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) for her project titled “Jointly modeling the effects of evolutionary processes on genomic variation”. 

UNC School of Medicine researchers Mohanish Deshmukh, PhD, professor of cell biology and physiology, and Praveen Sethupathy, PhD, a former professor of genetics and current chair of Biomedical Sciences at Cornell University, show that a molecule called miR-29 is instrumental in driving the aging process.

William Kim, MD, and Tracy Rose, MD, MPH, published a review highlighting new scientific insights that have led to advances in kidney cancer treatment and increased survival rates.

Melissa Haendel, PhD, FACMI (Distinguished Professor, Genetics) was recognized with a 2024 Leading for IMPACT – Women in Leadership Award from FORUM.

Cynthia M. Powell, MD, MS, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics, in the Division of Genetics and Metabolism, and Genetics received the Outstanding Academic Service Award in recognition of her groundbreaking work in genetics and newborn screening as well as her trusted partnership with pediatricians across North Carolina.
