Dr. Erin Heinzen Cox (Associate Professor, Pharmacy and Genetics) received an R01 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for her project titled “Defining Disease Mechanisms in SLC35A2 Epilepsy”. The project will focus on further characterization of brain-specific somatic mutations in SLC35A2 in individuals with refractory neocortical epilepsy by: 1) defining cell-type-specific expression of the variant; 2) evaluating glycosylation in hiPSC-derived neural progenitors and mature glutamatergic neurons and; 3) characterizing the effects of the variants on neural network activity, neural migration and neurodevelopment in human and mouse models.
